Cheshire Home Summerstrand

Located in Gomery Avenue, Summerstrand, Gqeberha was founded in 1975 by the late Professor Jan Christiaan Barnard. Cheshire Home provides care for chronically physically disabled adults (18+), offering assistance either by choice or due to circumstances beyond their control, in a safe and homely environment.

Today, nearly 50 years later, we have a wonderful Home that accommodates 57 differently abled adults. Forty four residents live in the main building while the others live in specially designed cottages suitable for either independent or assisted living.

The late Leonard Cheshire’s vision was always that a Cheshire Homes be run along the lines of a normal family home. We are a registered Non-Profit Organisation and Public Benefit Organisation, authorised to provide Section 18a Certificates for tax purposes.

In addition, the Home runs an outreach program, Khaya Cheshire, which started in 2001 and is now located at 7 Gomery Avenue, Summerstrand, Gqeberha. It serves as a Special Care and Development Centre for children from Walmer Township who have physical and intellectual disabilities. We provide a basic education, nutrition and support, with the end goal of helping them reintegrate into mainstream schooling where possible.

Khaya Cheshire

Khaya Cheshire is a non-profit organization based in Summerstrand, Gqeberha, dedicated to supporting physically and mentally disabled children. We strive to equip children with essential skills, helping them re-integrate into mainstream education and reach their full potential.
